Frederick William, the Great Elector, struck these coins during a period of aggressive territorial consolidation following the Treaty of Westphalia. Brandenburg-Prussia was simultaneously managing multiple mints across geographically separated territories, and the resulting output of this denomination shows considerable variation in die workmanship across the fourteen-year run — Schrötter documents over 140 distinct die combinations within this type alone.
