Xenophon Zolotas served as Governor of the Bank of Greece for over two decades across two separate tenures and briefly as Prime Minister of a technocratic caretaker government in 1989–1990 during a period of acute political deadlock. The commemorative honors a figure whose career was inseparable from the institution issuing it.
Greece's unconventional €6 face value places this piece outside standard eurozone denominations — a deliberate collector format used by the Bank of Greece for its commemorative program, with no circulation function whatsoever.
