Obverse description Half-length effigy of Elector John George I facing right, robed and wearing the electoral hat, holding a sword over his right shoulder; before him, a quartered shield of arms with a central escutcheon of electoral Saxony. The date 16-17 is divided by the shield. The surrounding legend reads VERBVM DOMINI MANET IN ÆTERNVM IOH GEOR 16 17, a motto from the Lutheran Reformation meaning 'The Word of the Lord endures forever.'
