| Obverse description | The obverse depicts the patron saints of Salzburg, Saint Rupert and Saint Virgil, shown as facing busts in high relief, each wearing episcopal vestments and pontifical mitres. The two figures are positioned facing one another across the central field, with a tall processional cross or staff between them and a stylized representation of the city of Salzburg visible below. Both saints are rendered in the elaborate Renaissance style characteristic of mid-sixteenth-century South German die-cutting. The circular legend reads S RVDBERTVS ET S VIRGILIVS EPI SALZBVRGN, enclosed within a beaded border. |
