| Reverse description | Central field is dominated by a three-line inscription within a lobed cartouche combining Arabic and Old Uyghur (Mongolian) script: the ruler's name and title 'al-Sulṭān al-ʿĀlim / Taghay Temür Khān' (the latter rendered in Old Uyghur script) and the pious formula 'khallada Allāh mulkahu' (May God perpetuate his rule). The marginal legend records the mint and date in Arabic: 'Zarb Jurjān fī sanat tisʿ wa thalāthīn sabʿamiʾa' (Struck at Jurjān in the year seven hundred and thirty-nine [AH 739 / AD 1338]). The combination of Arabic and Old Uyghur scripts on the reverse is a distinctive feature of Togha Temür's coinage, reflecting the dual cultural identity of the Ilkhanid successor rulers of Khorasan. The flan is characteristic of late Ilkhanid hand-struck production, with an uneven edge and moderate relief. |
