| Obverse description | Central field features a multi-lobed (quatrefoil) cartouche enclosing the Shi'a shahada in multiple horizontal lines of Arabic script, including the names of the Twelve Imams. The surrounding marginal legend, set within a beaded inner border and a rope-pattern outer border, contains a Quranic invocation of blessings upon the Prophet Muhammad and the Imams. The overall design is characteristic of Ilkhanid hammered silver coinage following Uljaytu's conversion to Twelver Shi'ism. The field and borders show the typical irregular flan and bold die-struck relief of early 14th-century Iranian mint production. |

Uljaytu — born Nicholas at his Nestorian Christian baptism, later Buddhist, then Sunni, then Shia — converted to Twelver Shia Islam around 1309–1310, a decision that sent shockwaves through the Ilkhanate and prompted him to replace the names of the first three Sunni caliphs on his coinage with those of the Twelve Imams. The resulting sectarian uproar was severe enough that he partially reversed course before his death in 1316, leaving the coinage of his reign a documentary record of his theological wandering.
Type C falls within this volatile middle period. The shift in religious formulae across Uljaytu's die sequences makes attribution to specific mint and regnal year critical for any serious study of his numismatic output.
