Pakistan issued this coin in 2019 to mark the 550th birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev Ji, founder of Sikhism, born in 1469 in Nankana Sahib — a city that now sits inside Pakistani Punjab. The commemorative carried political weight beyond ceremony: its release coincided with Pakistan's opening of the Kartarpur Corridor, allowing Sikh pilgrims from India visa-free access to Gurdwara Darbar Sahib for the first time since Partition in 1947.
The corridor's inauguration that November drew hundreds of thousands of pilgrims in its first months, before COVID-19 closures suspended crossings in 2020.
