Obverse description The upper right portion of the field depicts the SS Chelyuskin trapped and sinking in pack ice in high relief. To the left, three Soviet pennant flags bearing the inscriptions 'СССР СМП', a hammer-and-sickle emblem, and an aviation insignia are shown in descending order. The dates '1934' and '1984' appear at the upper left, and the Cyrillic legend 'ПЯТЬДЕСЯТ ЛЕТ ЧЕЛЮСКИНСКОЙ ЭПОПЕЕ' fills the right half of the field, with the mint year '1985' and a mint mark at the lower left.
