Part of China's long-running Lunar Gold series, which the People's Bank of China has issued annually since 1981, making it one of the longest-continuous bullion programs of any sovereign mint. The 500g denomination sits at the top of the Tiger year's gold release hierarchy, which also included 1g, 3g, 8g, 15g, 30g, and 150g options — a tiered structure deliberately engineered to capture collectors across every price point while concentrating prestige in the largest format.
Mintage for the 500g piece was capped at 1,800 examples.
