The first series of Renminbi, issued by the People's Bank of China beginning in December 1948, was produced under wartime conditions across multiple printing facilities — some notes were lithographed in liberated zones with whatever equipment the Communist administration could control. The 5000 Yuan denomination was among the highest face values issued in this series, reflecting the severe inflation inherited from the Nationalist monetary collapse that the new currency was explicitly designed to replace.

Authorized facsimiles of first-series Renminbi notes were produced for collector distribution decades after the originals, as genuine circulated examples became politically sensitive to possess during certain periods.
