Additional information

Mongolia's wild horse — the Przewalski's horse, or *takhi* — was declared extinct in the wild by the late 1960s, surviving only in captivity. By 1996, coordinated reintroduction programs were actively returning captive-bred animals to the Mongolian steppe, making the timing of this issue directly tied to a live conservation effort rather than retrospective commemoration. The coin was struck the same year the first reintroduction herds were being established at Hustai Nuruu.
