Kazakhstan's own banknote factory, established in Almaty in 1997, was a deliberate assertion of monetary infrastructure — the country had spent its first years of independence relying on Harrison & Sons and other foreign printers. This 5000 Tenge, issued in 2001, was among the early high-denomination notes produced entirely domestically, a meaningful shift for a central bank barely a decade old.
The security specification is modest by the standards of the denomination — watermark and thread only, without the optically variable elements that would appear on later issues. Collectors should note that paper quality from the Almaty factory's early production runs can be inconsistent.
