Uganda's entry into the commemorative coin market coincided with Italia '90 fever still running hot — this 1992 issue was produced ahead of the United States hosting the 1994 FIFA World Cup, part of a wave of African central bank commemoratives licensed through European distributors rather than driven by domestic demand. The Bank of Uganda had virtually no tradition of silver coinage for circulation; issues like this one were struck explicitly for the collector export market.
