This coin commemorates the 200th anniversary of the 1802 encounter between Matthew Flinders and Nicolas Baudin off Encounter Bay, South Australia — two captains, one British and one French, mapping the same coastline from opposite directions during a period when Britain and France were nominally at war under the Peace of Amiens. The meeting was famously civil. Baudin's expedition had already lost significant crew to dysentery; Flinders was racing to complete his circumnavigation before his charts could be claimed or intercepted.
Uganda's involvement is purely a commercial issuing arrangement with no historical connection to the subject matter.
