Banco de Portugal printed its own notes in-house at the Estamparia from the 1880s onward, giving the bank direct control over production at a time when most peripheral European issuers still contracted to London or Paris firms. The 1905 series falls within that self-sufficient period, though the in-house facility was not always consistent in ink density across print runs — a known variation collectors encounter with this type.

The 5 Mil Reis denomination sat at a practical mid-range value during Portugal's Bimetallic period, before the monetary turbulence that preceded the 1910 republic. Pick #9 is among the scarcer surviving pieces from this printer, largely because redemption rates were high.
