The upper legend 'AFRICAN WILDLIFE' arcs along the top of the coin, with the word 'ELEPHANT' along the lower left periphery. The fineness and weight designation '1oz Ag 999' appears along the lower right, with decorative dot punctuation separating the inscriptions. The design is set against a highly polished mirror field, characteristic of the African Wildlife bullion series.

Additional information

Zambia's wildlife-themed silver issues from this period were produced under license by foreign minting houses — primarily the Pobjoy Mint in the UK — as deliberate hard-currency earners rather than domestic monetary instruments. The Bank of Zambia authorized these coins while the country was navigating a debt restructuring period following decades of copper revenue collapse after the 1970s commodity crash gutted the national economy.

KM#143 is one of several elephant-themed denominations struck in this series, most of which never circulated domestically at face value — the 5000 Kwacha denomination represented a substantial sum relative to average Zambian wages in 2002.
