| Additional information |
Thomas Aquinas died in 1274 at the Cistercian abbey of Fossanova, reportedly while dictating a commentary on the Song of Songs — an oddly intimate end for scholasticism's great systematizer. Why the Lao PDR, a one-party communist state, chose to commemorate a Dominican friar and Doctor of the Catholic Church on a 1999 silver issue is not documented in any mint release. The coin belongs to a broader run of Lao commemoratives from this period aimed squarely at the collector export market, with no intended domestic circulation.
