By the mid-1990s, Suriname's currency had been devastated by hyperinflation following the economic collapse and military-political instability of the preceding decade. The 5000 Gulden denomination — unthinkable a generation earlier — was a direct consequence of inflation that had rendered smaller notes nearly worthless for everyday transactions. Thomas De La Rue handled the printing, as they did for much of the Centrale Bank's output during this period.
The series was short-lived. Suriname replaced the Gulden entirely with the Surinamese Dollar in January 2004, at a conversion rate of 1000 Gulden to 1 Dollar — making this note worth exactly five of the new units.
