The Yak-7B was a Soviet fighter-trainer conversion that became a front-line combat aircraft out of necessity — the original Yak-7 two-seater was hastily adapted for single-seat fighter use after the catastrophic Soviet aircraft losses of 1941. It saw substantial action on the Eastern Front through 1942 and 1943 before being superseded by the Yak-9.
Burundi's issuance of a coin honoring Soviet WWII aircraft has no historical connection to the country — this is a third-party collector issue, produced under license arrangements common among small nations monetizing their minting authority for the numismatic market.
