| Reverse description | An extraordinarily detailed high-relief composition filling the entire reverse field with a densely populated tableau of characters drawn from Shakespeare's dramatic works. At the centre, a seated figure resembling Shakespeare himself is depicted reading from an open folio, surrounded by a radiant aureole. Encircling this central scene are numerous figures in Elizabethan and medieval costume representing characters from tragedies, comedies, and histories, including armoured knights, courtiers, lovers, and fantastical beings, rendered with remarkable sculptural depth. In the lower foreground, an embracing couple and two greyhounds are prominently featured, evoking scenes of romance and courtly life. The entire composition is executed in ultra-high relief with an antique finish, producing a dramatic chiaroscuro effect across the teeming figural groups. No legends or inscriptions appear on the reverse. |
