Gabon's participation in the commemorative bullion market accelerated sharply after 2010, with the Banque des États de l'Afrique Centrale authorizing a series of small-format gold issues tied to European historical events that have no direct connection to Central Africa. The Berlin Wall fell on November 9, 1989, after East Germany opened its checkpoints following a miscommunicated press announcement by spokesman Günter Schabowski, who had not been fully briefed on the planned policy.
The Swarovski crystal inlays are a production feature of the Austrian Münze Österreich, which struck this issue under contract.
