Issued two years before the Munich Games opened, this piece was struck under the authority of the Banque des États de l'Afrique Équatoriale et du Cameroun — a supranational central bank serving Chad, Central African Republic, Congo-Brazzaville, Gabon, and Cameroon — at a moment when the institution was already in its final years before dissolution into the Banque des États de l'Afrique Centrale in 1972. Olympic gold issues of this period were common fundraising instruments for developing-nation mints with limited domestic coin programs.
The Munich Games themselves were overshadowed by the September 1972 massacre of eleven Israeli athletes by the Black September organization — an event that occurred after this coin had already been in circulation for two years.
