Obverse description The obverse features the coat of arms of Rwanda prominently rendered in the central field, depicting a shield quartered with a sun, sorghum plant, and a gear motif, flanked by two knotted serpents at the base and surmounted by a banner bearing the legend REPUBULIKA Y U RWANDA. The arms are encircled by a broad outer legend reading NATIONAL BANK OF RWANDA - BANKI INKURU Y'U RWANDA, disposed along the upper periphery, while the denomination 5000 FRW appears along the lower rim. A secondary legend UBUMWI - UMURIMO - GUKUNDA IGIHUGU, the national motto meaning Unity, Work, Patriotism, is inscribed below the shield in the lower field. The design employs a proof finish with frosted devices contrasting against a mirror-polished field.

Additional information

Rwanda's National Bank issued this piece to mark the 50th anniversary of the institution itself, founded in 1964 shortly after independence from Belgian administration. The commemorative program was part of a broader series celebrating Rwandan financial infrastructure — notable given that less than two decades earlier the banking system had been effectively destroyed during the 1994 genocide, requiring near-total reconstruction of the country's monetary apparatus.
