Guinea's 1985 issue came during a period of acute economic instability following Sékou Touré's death in March 1984 and the military coup that immediately succeeded it. The new junta, CMRN, inherited an economy wrecked by decades of autarkic mismanagement and a currency — the syli — that had been rendered nearly worthless through forced exchange rates and black market erosion. This note was issued under the reconstituted Banque Centrale after the syli was abolished and the franc restored at a rate of 1 franc to 100 sylis.
Giesecke & Devrient handled the printing from Munich, a common arrangement for Francophone African issuers during this period.
