| Reverse description | Bare-headed portrait bust of President Masie Nguema Biyogo facing left, rendered in moderate relief and occupying the central field. The circumferential legend MASIE NGUEMA BIYOGO PRESIDENTE VITALICIO runs along the upper and lateral periphery. The date · 1978 · appears in the lower field beneath the truncation, flanked by raised dot stops. The portrait is executed in a restrained, official style typical of African state coinage of the period. |

| Additional information |
Masie Nguema Biyogo was the birth name of Francisco Macías Nguema, the first president of Equatorial Guinea, who by 1978 had dismantled every institution of the state, banned the word "intellectual," and presided over the killing or exile of roughly a third of the country's population. The island of Bioko had been renamed after him personally. He was overthrown and executed by firing squad in 1979, just months after this essai was produced.
Pattern issues from his regime are extraordinarily rare in any metal. This gold essai almost certainly never entered circulation.
