Issued to mark the fiftieth anniversary of Jamaican independence, this was the highest denomination the Bank of Jamaica had ever released at the time of issue. The hybrid substrate — a laminated paper-polymer composite — was a deliberate choice for a commemorative note expected to see real handling rather than be immediately retired to albums.
De La Rue's hybrid material had only recently become commercially viable for central bank use, and Jamaica was among the earlier adopters at this format.
