Serbia restored the dinar as its sole official currency in 2003 after severing the monetary union with Montenegro, and the commemorative program that followed was partly an exercise in asserting a distinct national identity through coinage. Tesla was a natural choice — claimed by both Serbia and Croatia since his 1856 birth in the then-Ottoman, then-Austrian village of Smiljan placed him in perpetually contested ethnic and political territory.
KM#44 was struck in a small proof issue and was never intended for circulation.
