Nāṣer al-Dīn Shāh was assassinated on May 1, 1896 — shot by Mirzā Reza Kermāni at the shrine of Shah Abdol-Azim just five days before the planned celebration of his fiftieth year on the throne. Coins struck in his name that year exist in the ambiguous space between his reign and its violent end, issued by a mint still operating under his authority even as the succession passed to Mozaffar al-Din.
KM#928 represents one of the smaller gold denominations of the Qājār toman system, struck at a fineness consistent with late-reign monetary reforms aimed at stabilizing exchange rates against the British sovereign.
