| Obverse description | Facing bust of Mozaffar ad-Din Shah Qajar at center, wearing a distinctive karakul hat adorned with a star and feathered plume, with a beard and mustache rendered in fine detail. The effigy is framed by two symmetrical oak branches extending from the lower field, their boughs meeting beneath the portrait. A Persian legend curves along the upper rim identifying the shah as Sultan and Shahanshah of Iran, while a commemorative inscription in the field to either side of the bust reads 'Sekke Mowlud Homayuni' (Royal Birthday Coin). The solar year 1322 appears in Eastern Arabic numerals within the wreath at the base, all within a beaded border. |

| Additional information |
Struck to mark the fiftieth year of Mozaffar od-Din Shah's birth — not his reign — this issue appeared at a politically precarious moment. Mozaffar od-Din had borrowed heavily from Russia and Britain to fund his European tours, and the Constitutional Revolution was less than two years away. The jubilee coinage was, in effect, a celebration staged over a crumbling foundation.
