Vietnam's lunar new year gold issues were introduced in the late 1990s as official bullion gifts, timed precisely to the Tết calendar. The 2001 Snake issue corresponds to Tân Tỵ, the Year of the Metal Snake — a designation that made the .9999 fine gold composition a deliberate symbolic choice by the State Bank.
Mintages for this series were kept extremely low, with distribution handled primarily through state-affiliated banks in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City during the Tết period.
