Obverse description The national coat of arms of Costa Rica occupies the central field, depicting three volcanoes rising above a maritime scene with a sailing vessel, flanked by scrolled supports and surmounted by a ribbon inscribed AMERICA CENTRAL. The circular legend REPUBLICA DE COSTA RICA arcs along the upper periphery, while the lower legend reads B.C.C.R. - CINCO MIL COLONES - 1981, with the fineness mark LEY 0.900 appearing in the lower exergue beneath the shield. The entire design is framed by a finely beaded border, and the mirrored proof fields provide sharp contrast against the frosted relief of the arms.
