Additional information

Equatorial Guinea gained independence from Spain in 1968, but Francisco Macías Nguema's increasingly brutal dictatorship strained that relationship to the breaking point. His overthrow by Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo in August 1979 opened a diplomatic reset, and Spain moved quickly to re-establish ties with the new regime. This pattern piece — struck in aluminium rather than a precious metal — was produced to commemorate a Spanish royal visit in that context of renewed relations, though it never advanced to an approved circulation issue.
