Additional information

Trial strikes of this Kościuszko 500 Złotych were produced in 1976 as part of Poland's People's Republic-era program of testing proposed coin designs in non-precious metals before committing to final production specifications. The nickel composition distinguishes this piece from the silver proofs and the cupro-nickel circulation strikes that followed — it exists purely as a technical and administrative artifact of the mint approval process.

Kościuszko's appearance on high-denomination Polish coinage carried obvious political utility for the communist government: a revolutionary hero whose career conveniently predated any ideological complications, acceptable to both nationalist sentiment and the party line.
