Additional information

Michał Korybut Wiśniowiecki's election as King of Poland in 1669 was less a triumph than a compromise — the szlachta, deadlocked between powerful magnate factions backing more credible candidates, settled on him precisely because he lacked a political base strong enough to threaten anyone. His four-year reign was defined almost entirely by the humiliating Treaty of Buczacz in 1672, under which Poland ceded Podolia and right-bank Ukraine to the Ottoman Empire — the only peace treaty in Polish history that required tribute payments to a foreign power.
