| Obverse description | The Polish state eagle displayed at center, depicted with spread wings, a crown, and a shield on its breast, rendered in high relief against a flat field. The date 19 89 is divided and positioned to either side of the eagle's body at mid-height. The denomination ZŁ 500 ZŁ appears in bold numerals across the lower portion of the field, flanked by the abbreviated currency symbol. The circular legend POLSKA RZECZPOSPOLITA LUDOWA arcs along the upper periphery in raised Latin lettering. The mintmark of the Warsaw Mint (MW) appears below the eagle. |

Issued in the final months of communist Poland, this trial strike was produced as the Round Table Agreements were being negotiated — the very talks that would end one-party rule by August 1989. The commemorative theme, honoring the 1939 defense against the German invasion, carried obvious political weight at a moment when the state was simultaneously collapsing and trying to assert historical legitimacy through its mint.
Trial strikes of this type were produced in alternative metals for approval purposes and rarely escaped institutional collections.
