Obverse description Within the silver outer ring, the gold centre features a detailed rendering of the Temple of Heaven (Tiantan) in Beijing, viewed from a slightly elevated frontal perspective, with its characteristic triple-eaved circular hall and surrounding balustrade. The Chinese legend 中华人民共和国 (People's Republic of China) arcs along the upper portion of the silver ring in relief. The four-digit date 1997 appears in the lower field of the gold centre below the temple.

Reverse description The gold centre of the bimetallic reverse depicts two giant pandas in a naturalistic setting, one reclining and one seated among bamboo shoots and foliage, rendered in high relief with fine detail. The denomination 500元 appears in the upper field of the gold centre. Inscriptions within the silver outer ring indicate the coin's metallic composition and weight, reading .9999 5oz Au + .999 2oz Ag in Latin characters along the left arc of the ring.
