| Reverse description | Finely detailed proof relief scene depicting the legendary Oath of the Peach Garden (桃园三结义), a pivotal episode from the Romance of the Three Kingdoms in which Liu Bei, Guan Yu, and Zhang Fei swear brotherhood. Three robed figures are shown in a garden setting: one kneeling in homage and two standing, flanked by a ceremonial altar with candles and offerings to the left and a blossoming branch to the right, all rendered with exceptional artistic detail against a deeply mirrored field. The denomination 500元 appears prominently at the top of the field, and the legend 桃园三结义 (Oath of the Peach Garden) is inscribed in the lower exergue. |

| Additional information |
Part of China's long-running literary figures bullion series, this issue commemorates Luo Guanzhong, the 14th-century author credited with writing Romance of the Three Kingdoms and Water Margin — two of the four classical novels considered the foundation of Chinese vernacular fiction. The series was aimed squarely at international collector markets and exported heavily through the 1990s, making domestic circulation essentially irrelevant from the outset.
Mintage for individual issues in this series was tightly controlled, typically in the low thousands.
