Issued in the year of Hong Kong's handover, this coin anticipates the Macau reversion by two years — that transfer wouldn't occur until December 1999. The pairing of Deng Xiaoping with the Macau theme is posthumous; Deng died in February 1997, months before Hong Kong was handed over and well before Macau returned. The "one country, two systems" formula he engineered applied to both territories, which likely explains the commemorative logic, but he did not live to see either handover completed.
