The Bank of Shansi, Chahar & Hopei — known in Chinese as 晋察冀银行 (Jìn-Chá-Jì Yínháng) — was the official currency authority of the Jin-Cha-Ji Border Region, one of the main Communist-controlled base areas behind Japanese lines in North China. Notes issued here were wartime instruments, printed under difficult conditions in mobile or semi-clandestine facilities as the border region was under constant military pressure. By 1944, the border region's economy was managing both anti-Japanese resistance and internal inflation simultaneously.
High-denomination issues like this 500 Yuan piece reflect the inflationary pressure bearing down on border region currencies in the later war years.
