The Bank of Shansi, Chahar & Hopei — commonly abbreviated as the Chin-Cha-Chi Bank — was a Communist-controlled regional issuer operating in the guerrilla base areas behind Japanese lines, and later against Nationalist forces during the civil war. This 500 Yuan note dates from 1946, by which point the bank had been issuing currency across the liberated border region for nearly a decade, serving as the primary monetary instrument of Communist administration in a zone that had no stable access to central banking infrastructure.
High denominations like this one reflect the inflationary pressure that plagued all Chinese currency in the mid-1940s, Nationalist and Communist alike. The Chin-Cha-Chi issues are underrepresented in Western collections largely due to their restricted geographic circulation and the destruction of large quantities after the People's Bank of China absorbed regional issuers following 1949.
