Obverse description The copper-nickel centre features a dynamic depiction of Raijin (雷神), the Japanese god of thunder, rendered in the classical ukiyo-e artistic tradition inspired by Tawaraya Sotatsu's celebrated screen painting. The deity is shown in vigorous motion, surrounded by a ring of drums, with flowing robes and an expressive, fierce visage. The legend 日本国 (State of Japan) arcs across the upper field, while 五百円 (500 Yen) is inscribed at the lower field, all within a beaded inner border. The design occupies the copper-nickel centre disc, with a plain nickel brass outer ring framing the composition.
