| Obverse description | Central motif depicts the Jōmon-no-Megami, a celebrated dogū (clay figurine) of the Jōmon period discovered in Yamagata Prefecture, rendered in high relief and positioned upright in the field. The stylized prehistoric goddess figure, notable for its distinctive head, outstretched arms, and trapezoidal lower body with incised decorative lines, dominates the composition. Large kanji characters forming the legends radiate dynamically around the central figure as decorative elements. To the left of the figure, the Latin inscription 'YAMAGATA' appears above the kanji '山形県' identifying the prefecture. A beaded border encircles the entire design. |
