Additional information

This piece belongs to Japan's 47 Prefectures Coin Program, a government initiative launched in 2008 to issue two commemorative 500 yen coins per prefecture — one celebrating local imagery, the other flora or landscape features. Tochigi Prefecture, home to the Nikkō Tōshō-gū shrine complex, received its issues across the program's multi-year rollout. The coins were sold through Japan Post in sets rather than circulated widely, meaning most survivors are in original packaging.
