Reverse description The reverse displays a stylized representation of the Japanese characters '地方自治' (local autonomy) arranged around a central square motif in the manner of a traditional Japanese coin, occupying the copper-nickel inner disc with a textured background field. The nickel brass outer ring carries the legend 'JAPAN 47 PREFECTURES COIN PROGRAM' along the upper arc in Latin letters, and along the lower arc the denomination '500 YEN' to the left and the Japanese era date '平成 23 年' (Year 23 of Heisei) to the right, separated by a space. The issue sequence '(47/60)' identifies this coin as the 47th release in the 60-coin series. The design is framed by a beaded inner border on the ring and a reeded outer edge.
