Obverse description The copper-nickel centre features a detailed relief portrait of one of the famous Usuki Stone Buddhas of Ōita Prefecture, rendered in a naturalistic sculptural style, filling most of the inner disc. The legend 日本国 (State of Japan) arcs across the upper field of the outer ring, flanked within the inner disc by the Latin inscription OITA to the left and the kanji 大分県 (Ōita Prefecture) below it. The denomination 五百円 (500 yen) is inscribed in kanji along the lower portion of the outer ring. The entire design is encircled by a beaded border separating the bimetallic ring from the centre.

Reverse description The copper-nickel centre depicts a stylised representation of an old cast Mon coin, circular in form with a square central hole, bearing kanji characters 地方自治 (local autonomy) arranged around the perforation and incorporating latent image security features within the design. The nickel brass outer ring carries the legend JAPAN 47 PREFECTURES COIN PROGRAM arcing around the upper periphery, with the denomination 500 YEN and the Japanese era date 平成24年 (Year 24 of Heisei, 2012) inscribed along the lower field. A beaded border frames the junction between the two metallic zones.
