Obverse description The obverse features a frontal view of Zenkoji Temple, one of Japan's most celebrated Buddhist temples located in Nagano Prefecture, rendered in fine relief against a stylised circular field evoking a full moon or rising sun. To the right, a dynamic depiction of the Goryunba (sacred horse) gallops across the field, referencing the famous ox-and-horse legend associated with Zenkoji. The denomination 五百円 (500 yen) is inscribed along the lower border, flanked by the bimetallic ring. The legend 日本国 (State of Japan) arcs across the upper field, while the prefecture name appears in both Latin script (NAGANO) and Japanese characters (長野県) above the lower legend.
