Obverse description Central field features a dynamic depiction of a traditional Kyoto festival scene, prominently showing a large decorative float or hoko (鉾) adorned with elaborate textile drapery, characteristic of the renowned Gion Matsuri festival. A towering figure in ceremonial robes is visible to the right, rendered in high relief. The inscription 日 本 国 (State of Japan) arcs along the upper border, with KYOTO and 京都府 (Kyoto Prefecture) inscribed to the left of the central design, and 五 百 円 (500 Yen) at the base. The coin's outer nickel brass ring frames the copper-nickel centre, with a beaded inner border separating the legend from the central motif.
