Obverse description Central field features a detailed relief view of Mount Sakurajima, the iconic active stratovolcano of Kagoshima Prefecture, depicted with a billowing plume of volcanic smoke rising dramatically from its summit against a circular mirror-polished background. The Latin legend KAGOSHIMA and the Japanese characters 鹿児島県 appear to the upper left of the volcanic image within the copper-nickel centre. The denomination 五百円 is inscribed along the lower arc of the nickel brass outer ring, while the country name 日本国 runs along the upper arc, all set within a beaded border.
