Reverse description The upper portion of the reverse features horizontal parallel lines against which the year 1998 appears at upper right and the host city legend NAGANO is inscribed in Latin letters at centre right, with a stylised floral branch to the left. The Olympic rings are prominently displayed in the centre field. A rock ptarmigan (raichō), the official bird of Nagano Prefecture, stands in profile to the right in the lower field. The denomination 500 YEN is inscribed in Latin characters at centre left, with the Japanese regnal date 平成9年 (Year 9 of Heisei) below. A raised bead border frames the entire design.
