Obverse description Intaglio portrait of statesman Tomomi Iwakura at right, his name inscribed in kanji below the vignette. A large central guilloche underprint frames the denomination characters 五百円 in bold kanji, with the issuer legend 日本銀行券 above and 日本銀行 below. A sprig of sakura cherry blossoms occupies the lower left, and a red seal of the Ministry of Finance is positioned centrally toward the base.

Reverse description A detailed intaglio landscape vignette of Mount Fuji viewed from the foothills dominates the centre-left, with trees and lower mountain ridges in the foreground. To the right, a large ornate guilloche rosette encloses the numeral 500, with a red Ministry of Finance seal overlapping the design below. The inscription NIPPON GINKO appears in a decorative cartouche at the top, and 500 YEN is lettered in a guilloche band along the bottom border.
